The first season of the BBC series The Chase fits the definition of a soap opera. From the high drama to the intertwined relationships, this campy series is fresh and enjoyable.
Chevin Chase is a family-owned and run veterinary practice in Yorkshire, England. Patriarch George Williams (Keith Barron) marries his second wife, Claudie (Michelle Holmes), and decides to retire from the practice and travel to Malta for an extended stay. Sarah (Nicola Stephenson) is George's daughter and Anna's (Gaynor Faye) sister, who has been estranged from the family and living in London. Sarah is home for the wedding and gets caught having to work in the office when their father leaves them in a lurch. "The Chase" is rounded out by Anna's husband, Tom (Nicholas Gleaves), and senior partner Rick (Reece Dinsdale). Rick's wife, Deborah (Janet Dibley), is the office manager and has her nose in everyone's business. Fiona Jones (Heather Peace) used to work at The Chase as an assistant but left under questionable circumstances; now she has returned to help out.
The comings and goings of these characters and their escapades leaves one's head spinning, but it's loads of fun in the process. Secrets abound, and everyone seems to be hiding something from many of the others. The accents may be a bit difficult to decipher for U.S. viewers unused to hearing the British phrasing, but if you enjoy American nighttime dramas such as Desperate Housewives and Dirty Sexy Money , The Chase may just be up your alley. Although the ins and outs of working in a veterinary clinic might seem tame, in reality life around The Chase is anything but.
I was pleasantly delighted to experience this first series of The Chase on DVD and am looking forward to the release of season two.
