TRIBECA 2008
Robert De Niro's 7th annual Tribeca Film Festival contains such star-studded fare as Madonna's documentary I AM BECAUSE WE ARE (Malawi children orphaned by AIDS); the road trip flick TENNESSEE, featuring Mariah Carey as an aspiring singer; and John Cusack's WAR, INC., a darkly humorous "send-up of war zone capitalism gone amok." Ooh ooh ooh! The first potential superhero blockbuster of (pre-)summer 2008 debuts in (duh) wide release May 2, and who can't root for perennially chemically challenged Robert Downey Jr. as billionaire Tony Stark, whose high-tech suit of armor transforms him into Marvel Comics' IRON MAN; [cue ominous Black Sabbath track here]... GONE BABY GONE 's Michelle Monaghan plays the newly engaged, longtime best friend of GREY'S ANATOMY 's McDreamy Patrick Dempsey in the romantic comedy MADE OF HONOR, opening wide May 2... Based on Canadian poet Anne Michaels' debut novel , FUGITIVE PIECES tells of a man trying to free himself from the legacy of his childhood, when he witnessed the slaughter of his Polish family by Nazis during WWII; Stephen Dillane stars in the May 2 limited release... It seems a curious turn for legendary writer/director David Mamet, best known for cerebral dramas and thrillers like GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS and HEIST ; will his usual fans turn out for his mixed martial arts (Mamet trained under a jiu-jitsu master for five years) morality piece? REDBELT opens in limited release May 2 ...
With a cast featuring Emile Hirsch, Christina Ricci and Matthew Fox, even non-fans of the iconic 1960's Japanimation series may flock to the Wachowski brothers' (THE MATRIX ) live action SPEED RACER, which teams Speed with former rival Racer X to stop a cabal of moguls from destroying his family's business and the sport he loves; opens wide May 9... It will likely appeal to a certain demographic: Cameron Diaz and Ashton Kutcher star as two strangers who find themselves married after a drunken debauch in Vegas and, before they can undo their mistake, mutually win a jackpot and fall into a series of schemes to get their hands on all the money; opening wide May 9 is the romantic comedy WHAT HAPPENS IN VEGAS... It's without a doubt the most interesting thing to hit U.S. screens this week, so naturally it's a limited release <grimace>; in THE FALL, a little immigrant girl in a 1920's hospital in LA recovering from a fall befriends a bedridden patient who captivates her with a fantasy story of five heroes from different corners of the globe, all out to avenge the wrongs wrought by a powerful aristocrat - catch it in NY or LA May 9 (it will begin rolling out across the rest of the country through May and June)...
