Musical television has been tried many times before and failed absolutely miserably. Glee breaks out of this mold: it's a fantastic series that combines music and acting to provide stellar entertainment. The Glee phenomenon started in the spring of 2009, when the pilot episode was shown a few times on network television. It was a huge hit, and the songs and episode itself became some of the hottest iTunes downloads over the summer. It came back in the fall, and has only grown in popularity through the 12-episode fall season. As there won't be any new episodes until April of 2010, the company wisely decided to release a first half of season one DVD set so that viewers can get their Glee fix until the series returns with new episodes. This four-disc set contains all 13 episodes of the first half of season one. If you're unfamiliar with the Glee premise, it is as follows: Spanish teacher Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison) was a member of William McKinley High School's Glee Club during his high school years. He has fond memories of this time of his life and seeks to re-create it again. Yet the only current members of the Glee Club could be tagged the "Geek" club. They are the unpopular and the outcasts, and not very many of them at that, headed by diva Rachel (Lea Michele). Schuester recruits some jocks and cheerleaders-namely the handsome Finn (Corey Monteith) and his girlfriend, Quinn (Diana Argron). This creates a great deal of animosity between Schuester and head cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester (played by the amazing Jane Lynch). Along with attempting to develop their Glee Club into a team worthy of competing at sectionals, the group must deal with outside turmoil, including Will's wife's pregnancy (or not), Quinn's pregnancy and the uncertainty about the father, along with other themes of teen sexuality, homosexuality, disability, and other heavier subjects set to a light tone. The music of the show really helps to even out some of the more ridiculous drama moments. Even if you think a storyline is a bit "out there," a musical number is just around the corner and will make you eager to see more of these talented actors and singers. When the drama hits a strong note, then it really shines and touches the viewer's heart. A slew of special features makes this a must-purchase for fans of the show, or for those who enjoy musical comedy and/or drama. The extras pack in more songs, hilarious features, and in-depth interviews and information about the cast. If you already love Glee, you will definitely want to add this 4-disc collection to your DVD library to watch shows again and again. If you've never watched an episode, then you'll want to purchase it to see what all of the fuss is about. Believe me, you won't regret it. |
