Shades of Sabrina, The Teenage Witch and The Parent Trap color Twitches Too , as does a shadowy threat that twin witches Camryn Barnes and Alex Fielding thought they had banished forever in Twitches , the predecessor to this fun if not stellar made-for-TV sequel.
Cam (Tamera Mowry) and Alex (Tia Mowry) are just settling into their sometimes frictive relationship as reunited twin sisters who happen to be magical princesses in the alternate world of Coventry. Alex is keen on getting back to university, and Cam is - well, Cam, social butterfly and fashion diva. But the girls don't get to enjoy the relative calm for long when they are summoned to their birth mother, Coventry's Queen Miranda (Kristen Wilson). It seems that their uncle Thantos (Patrick Fabian), whom the twins defeated in an epic magical battle in the first movie, may not have been completely vanquished. An impending solar eclipse will provide a window of opportunity for the girls to destroy everything in the Shadowlands - including the evil Thantos. But they've got a lot of spell-learning ahead of them before they can hope to pull that off.
In addition to the distractions of regular Earth-girl life, Cam drifts off topic when she meets Demitri (Chris Gallinger), a handsome "prince", in the castle. Alex, meanwhile, is reluctant to give short shrift to her education - and she also believes that Miranda is mistaken about what should be done. She's been having dreams and writing stories that have convinced her that their father Aron, presumed dead for twenty-one years, is still alive and trapped in the Shadowlands.
While Twitches Too is far from an award-winning cinematic experience, it is passable family entertainment fare whose most appreciative audience is probably tween-aged girls. The script is not too inspired, nor are the performances by the lead actors (although Tamera Mowry does seem to have an awful lot of fun with her role), but the special effects are surprisingly solid for a made-for-TV movie. It's ultimately an amusing enough take on familiar fairy tale themes that makes clear the importance of responsibility, especially if you're a princess - and a Twitch.
