The Disney Channel is known for its Original Movies, which are enjoying an extended audience thanks to their release on DVD. Minutemen features a trio of time-traveling misfits who journey back to past high school experiences to help themselves and their friends avoid disastrous experiences. The movie opens three years in the past. Virgil Fox (Jason Dolley from Disney Channel's Cory in the House) is hanging out on the football field when boy genius Charlie Tuttle (Luke Benward) races onto the field in a rocket car. Chaos ensues, and the end result is that Virgil and Charlie are humiliated by the football players, who dress them up as cheerleaders and hang them from the school statue. Charlie and Virgil become friends, and time moves ahead to their senior year in the present day. They are not popular, but Virgil really wants to become rich and hang out with the popular crowd. Charlie begins work on a time machine, based on his rocket car from the day the two met. They need some extra help, so they enlist Zeke (Nicholas Braun). After a failed "get rich quick" effort with the machine, they decide to go back and help fellow students re-do or prevent embarrassing moments in their pasts. They wear white suits to hide their identities and are known as the "Snowsuit Guys." However, not everything has the results they desire, and even when they prevent something bad from happening to someone, there are always unintended consequences in other ways. They end up opening a black hole, and that causes even more of a mess. Minutemen is a fun movie and will be especially appealing to "tween" or young teen boys and girls. It has some good lessons about the consequences of our actions, as well as learning to accept your friends for who they are and not always desiring to be part of the popular crowd. Adults might find the space-time issues to be illogical, but kids probably won't analyze that portion of the story to that extent. All in all, my nine-year-old son really liked this show and has watched it more than once. It's nice to have videos available for this age group that are wholesome and entertaining - ones that parents can feel good about letting their children watch. The bonus features include a "Making of" feature, which is funny and entertaining in its own right. The DVD release contains an extended ending that was not originally seen on the television show. Also included is a music video by Corbin Bleu (High School Musical, Flight 29 Down). |
