What would happen to you if you tried hitchhiking from New York to Los Angeles, relying only on the kindness and charity of others? Most likely you'd be murdered, robbed, raped, or kidnapped and locked in a basement for seven years, right? Those were some of the possibilities Ryan Jeanes and Phillip Hullquist considered before leaving on their week-long hitching voyage across the United States.
Ryan was on camera most of the time, and he's got an easygoing way with people that makes him likable. The ground rules were as follows:
They couldn't spend any of their own money, and they couldn't spend money on any of their own transportation. This meant they would have to rely on others for their food as well. They purchased a plane ticket from L.A. back to New York in order to enforce the one-week deadline. If they arrived late, they'd miss their flight.
What they encountered would hardly chill the blood. Turns out, people are generally pretty decent. People picked the twenty-something boys
up and gave them food, drink, and company for miles of their journey.
There were amazing stories from their rides and some crazy stories as well. Truckers, who used to be a staple of the hitchhiker, are now less willing to carry extra bodies due to corporate liability issues and weight limitations.
The Hitchhiking Movie is an enjoyable lark, if not proof-positive of the safety of hitchhiking. Popular media would have you believe that hitchhikers often fall prey to sadistic madmen. This didn't happen to our heroes, but bear in mind that there were two hitchhikers who had a camera rolling often to document their journey. There is safety in numbers, and safety in documented evidence. Hitchhike at your own risk, and keep in mind that it's not legal in several states - and bring your camcorder.
