Jim Gaffigan's new DVD, King Baby, is just as enjoyable as his last outing, Beyond the Pale. His sarcastic observations are mainly aimed at the inherent laziness of people in general, spending quite a bit of time on various food-related humor, like gluttony and the magic of bacon. Another characteristic of Gaffigan's stand-up is a higher-pitched voice he does that provides a self-mocking viewpoint from the audience's perspective. He often uses this to segue between topics and to present a counterpoint to his routine. I particularly enjoyed the bit on camping and being a houseguest. On the special features front, this DVD has episodes of "Our Massive Planet" and "Pale Force" with Conan O'Brien. Another interesting feature are the interviews included on this disc. They give you insight into Gaffigan's personal life and some of his history coming up through the ranks of struggling comedians. They're very absorbing and good advice for anybody considering a career in comedy. One minor complaint: some interlace issues are noticeable onscreen, but that hardly takes away from his comedic performance. I recommend you check this disc out. |
