Chuck Lorre scores big (joking) with his newest sitcom, Mike & Molly. Not only has the series benefitted by its slot right after Lorre's other hit show, Two and a Half Men, but it's already got an Emmy winner in Melissa McCarthy, (the Molly half of the titular couple). Billy Gardell plays Mike, and the rest of the characters include Mike's wise-cracking partner, Carl McMillan (Reno Wilson), who lives with his grandma, and Molly's ditzy sister, Victoria (Katy Mixon). At the diner where Mike and Carl eat, an immigrant worker named Samuel (Nyambi Nyambi) always serves them and delivers some great humor. Mike's mother, Peggy (Rondi Reed), shows up a half-dozen episodes into the season with her dog, Jim. Louis Mustillo (as Vince) becomes a regular as he goes from being set up with Molly to dating her mother, Joyce (TV veteran Swoosie Kurtz). And we can't forget Carl's grandma, "Nana"(Cleo King). The two-disc set contains all twenty-four episodes of the first season.
What doesn't work for me are the mothers. Both of them seem like forced clichés and don't come off real well. But it's only the first season, so hopefully the show will grow some more as the comedy becomes less about the main characters being overeaters and more about them as funny characters with a little less emphasis on food, weight, or flatulence jokes. It's got a solid start. The Blu-ray doesn't add much visually, but it does make it easier to watch as one disc can hold half a season. Let's see where the show goes now that it has a following. |
