I've got days worth of WWII documentaries and movies in my collection. I find the subject fascinating, and there are so many angles to investigate.
I am, however, torn by this one. On one side is a compelling six-episode series walking us through all the major events of the conflict. On the other is grainy, 70-some-year-old footage of the war, colorized and put on Blu-ray.
I loathe colorization. Flesh tones tend to look too peachy and large crowd scenes seemed to be painted with a 3-inch wide brush. In this case, I'm going to have to side with the colorization for one important reason: specific clips have been left in black and white, giving them a lot of extra punch - much like the girl with the red coat in Schindler's List , but in reverse. This is done sparingly enough that one doesn't get used to it. I still can't vouch for it getting upscaled to Blu-ray (there's just no point), but it is the same price as the DVD and you save one disc.
Apocalypse: World War II is an excellent WWII documentary. It's well put-together, full of depth and background info about so many aspects of the war without going overboard or boring the viewer. It would be a great tool for educating the young, but be warned that there are images of death and dead bodies and some decidedly non-salacious nudity.
