Christmas weekend 2011 ushers in several titles awaited with high expectations. David Fincher's English-language remake of THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO looks like it will stay true to the cool blue Swedish spirit of the late Steig Larsson's novel, opening up the audience for fans of his translated fiction who just aren't that into subtitles. The Daniel Craig / Rooney Mara vehicle hits theaters in wide release December 21.
Diehard fans of the classic comic series created by Belgian artist Herme are drooling to see what Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson's THE ADVENTURES OF TINTIN: THE SECRET OF THE UNICORN holds in store. One thing is certain: you've never seen the boy and his dog like this before. Opens wide on family-friendly screens December 21.
I don't think I ever really expected to see Scarlett Johansson's name printed following the words "Family drama starring," yet here we are. Matt Damon also stars in WE BOUGHT A ZOO, the premise of which is pretty well laid out right there in the title. Some critics worry that its depiction of a family that tries to save an animal park might encourage increased private ownership of exotic species of the sort that led to the apparent suicide-by-predator release of more than 50 animals upon an unsuspecting Zanesville, Ohio, a few months ago. We say go with the flow at the theater with the kids, but it might be worth bringing up in the post-cinematic family critique.
