Dr. Katz (voiced by Jonathan Katz) is not so much a therapist as a well-paid conversationalist.
His patients consist of the rich and/or famous, mostly comedians, who don't so much have problems as they have witty anecdotes. Dr. Katz
listens as they relate amusing incidents that have plagued their days.
It's an excellent format for trying out material for comedians such as Dave Attell, Janeane Garofalo, Denis Leary, Sarah Silverman, Conan O'Brien, and more.
Dr. Katz was an excellent show that ran on Comedy Central from 1995 to 1999. It's animated in what's known as Squigglevision, a computer animation that actually doesn't involve much animation. Every scene is a freeze-frame on a character, though the outlines of their body
seem to undulate and their mouths move to match what they are saying.
It's crude and cheap and really works for Dr. Katz . I'd love to see it come back and am thrilled that Comedy Central is releasing it on DVD.
Many of Dr. Katz's patients seem to just need to share wry observations with someone. None of them really have serious issues, though Julia Louis-Dreyfuss may have some trust issues. David Duchovny does spend a bit of time in the good doctor's closet - he seems a bit skittish about being seen in the waiting room.
If you're not sure if you want to commit to a complete season or the complete series DVD sets, The Best of... is the way to go. It's a good start to get your feet wet, but I'm certain you'll yearn for more.
