High School Musical 3's release on DVD has been much anticipated. Since Disney took its phenomenally successful original movie franchise to the big screen with this third movie, many have had to wait for the DVD to see it, although it did do very well in theaters. For those who have been living on another planet for the past few years, the premise of all of the High School Musical movies involves a group of high school students from East High who are friends, boyfriend/girlfriend, and pleasant enemies as they navigate their way through their various activities. High School Musical 3: Senior Year catches up with our main characters: Troy (Zac Efron), Gabriella (Vanessa Hudgens), Chad (Corbin Bleu), Sharpay (Ashley Tisdale) and Ryan (Lucas Grabeel). The students are trying to figure out what they will do in the future. Will they go to college, and if so, which college and what will they major in? Will Troy and Gabriella choose colleges that are far from each other? Sharpay plans to be the star of the spring musical, as it's her last hurrah in high school. Gabriella encourages everyone to participate for much the same reason-it's their last opportunity to be together before they go their separate ways. The movie definitely has the feel of a larger scale production than did the first and second HSM movies (Disney Channel original movies). The production is bigger, bolder, and more over the top. The sets are fancier, the musical productions more elaborate. There are some catchy tunes in this movie, and I found myself tearing up during "We're All in This Together" as they are graduating. Even for an adult, this has been a highly enjoyable franchise. I will really miss the original cast members who are moving on to bigger and better things. Some new cast members have been added so that this successful series can continue. No one really sticks out in my mind, but it's nice to know that Disney is going to attempt to keep things going. I'm unsure how successful this will be-anyone remember the second class of Saved by the Bell? Overall, if you or your children are fans of the High School Musical movies, High School Musical 3: Senior Year should be at the top of your list to be purchased. It's an excellent movie to have in your DVD collection, and one you will watch over and over again. |
