Classic. Have I said too much? Executive producer Ivan Reitman (producer of classics like Animal House and Ghostbusters) and director Todd Phillips have struck a chord with me in this well-casted flick which pits responsibility vs. irresponsibility. It starts with Mitch (Luke Wilson) getting home early from a business trip to see the love of his life, Heidi (Juliette Lewis). Hearing moaning from their bedroom, he rushes in to find Heidi watching a porno. Relieved (and a little turned on), Mitch begins to undress - only to be surprised by Heidi's blindfolded romp partners exiting the closet. Wilson plays the part of a "crushed man" very well - I believed and felt sorry for him. This pain is quickly countered with pleasure as his friends "Frank the Tank" (Will Ferrell) and Beanie (Vince Vaughn) work to help him get over this crushing event. Put the boys on a campus, create a frat house, and let the hi-jinks begin!
Throughout Old School, we are reminded of Mitch's underlying pain and desire for true love, mainly Nichole (Ellen Pompeo), which balances very nicely with the outrageous events throughout the movie. Vince Vaughn's deadpan delivery and Will Ferrell's gifted ability to humiliate himself make this flick a winner. The deleted scenes reveal a little more about Mitch's reason for coming home early - to ask Heidi to marry; I would have liked to have seen this information in the movie, but I agree with the decision to cut the scene. I am a sucker for romantic comedies, and if your goal is to laugh, watch Old School and you will.
