As the saying goes: "If you can't do the time, then don't do the crime." But what if you already did the time? Should you then go and do the crime?
That's the premise of HENRY'S CRIME, a lighthearted romantic comedy/heist thriller. The movie stars Keanu Reeves as a meek tollbooth clerk named Henry Torne in Buffalo, New York. He comes home after a long night at work (he works the graveyard shift) and gets tricked (conned, really) into driving some friends to their local baseball game. Turns out what they really want is to rob a bank - and they do. But as they take off, the security guard, who just got a cup of coffee, sees them running. The guard also sees Henry in the getaway car with same baseball jersey on and pulls out his gun. Henry is busted but doesn't rat out the other guys.
Henry is sentenced to three years in prison, where he meets Max Saltzman (James Caan). Max is in prison for life, and the two men share a cell and bond. After serving his time Henry is released. But during his stint in prison, Henry's wife, Debbie (Judy Greer), leaves him for one of the bank robbers and gets pregnant. While walking in the street, Henry gets hit by a car. The driver, Julie Ivanova (Vera Farmiga), was on her cell phone; she gets out and blames Henry for the accident.
HENRY'S CRIME is not high-action; it has more of a laid-back pace. James Caan is fantastic as the prison lifer who knows he doesn't belong in the outside world. Vera Farmiga, who was great opposite George Clooney in Up in the Air and was excellent in the horror-thriller Orphan puts in another stellar performance. Even Keanu Reeves serves this story well.
HENRY'S CRIME is not the most remarkable movie, but it is a fun, solid piece of entertainment. The disc is a barebones release, but for this budget and type of film it is, it's not expected. It is most enjoyable especially if you are a fan of any of the actors. Plausibility aside, HENRY'S CRIME is a good choice if you're looking for something off the beaten path.
