The super-geniuses at Pixar triumph again with the Blu-ray release of TOY STORY 2 . Originally conceived as a direct to video throw-away (as were most Disney sequels at the time), TOY STORY 2 had the right stuff to be big-screen gold.
In this second outing, Andy's toys face new challenges. Woody (Tom Hanks) worries that Andy may be growing tired of him when he fails to take him to Cowboy Camp, the only one-on-one time Andy (John Morris) and Woody have together every year. On the heels of that, our cowboy hero gets kidnapped by unscrupulous toy collector Al (Wayne Knight) of Al's Toy Barn fame.
Woody is introduced to elements of his past he never knew about: his Roundup Gang. Woody discovers that he is a toy inspired by a 1950's marionette TV show called Woody's Roundup. Al plans to sell Woody to a Japanese toy museum along with all the other Roundup memorabilia, including a yodeling cowgirl named Jessie (Joan Cusack), a mute but adorable horse named Bullseye, and a grizzled old prospector with the unfortunate appellation of Stinky Pete (Kelsey Grammer).
Meanwhile, Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen), Rex (Wallace Shawn), Hamm (John Ratzenberger), Slinky Dog (Jim Varney) and Mr. Potato Head (Don Rickles) figure out where Woody has been taken and risk life and plastic limb to travel across town on a rescue mission.
Like all Pixar films, TOY STORY 2 is well-constructed from story to final product. It's one of the few sequels that is as enjoyable as the first, especially among children's films. New to this edition are more of Buzz's mission logs from the International Space Station, animated studio stories, a brief featurette on the Pixar Zoetrope, and a sneak peek at Toy Story 3's characters. Also included are classic extra features from previous releases of TOY STORY 2 on DVD. This Blu-ray Combo pack also includes a DVD for more versatile viewing, but no digital copy for some reason.
The Blu-ray picture and sound is amazing. My favorite scene in TS2 is when a toy car runs into a store display full of rubber balls. The balls bounce everywherem, both on the screen and in your ears. This is the reason to have surround sound - it is simply AWESOME! For fans of animation, kids or adults who have never gotten around to growing up, TOY STORY and TOY STORY 2 on Blu-ray are must-owns.
