In 1978, my sisters and I got to go see Grease, the musical phenomenon that all the kids were talking about. It was decided that we would go to the film dressed in 1950's style (though I honestly don't remember if we did). It was a great time. The film's iconic song "You're the One That I Want" was getting heavy rotation on the radio and the kids in the neighborhood were starting to talk about it. That was back in the days when the newspaper had a full page or two filled up with quarter and half-page movie ads and movies ran for several months at a time before leaving the theaters. I can still remember the awe I felt when they did "Summer Nights." Movies were different to me back then. Bigger than they are now.

Here we are thirty-one years later. and I'm seeing Grease again, as beautiful as it once was on that big screen in Normal, Illinois, but in the privacy of my own home. The musical numbers are as fresh and addictive as they were then, but now I actually get the sexual innuendo that I missed when I was eight. I still get an inkling of the awe I felt when "Summer Nights" cranks up, and I can hit the back button to start it all over again.

In case you've not been introduced, Grease is the story of a summer love that struggles to blossom amid peer pressure and the need to be cool. Danny Zuko (John Travolta) and Sandy Olsson (Olivia Newton-John) are the lovers who met during the summer but have to say goodbye when fall approaches. Sandy is returning to Australia, and Danny must again don his leather jacket to lead the T- Birds, a mostly non-threatening gang. After Danny and Sandy tell their school chums of their summer romance, their friends arrange a meeting at a school bonfire. Sandy didn't have to go back to Oz after all. Danny is thrilled at first but has to dampen his excitement so as not to lose face with the other T-Birds. Throughout, they try to make their relationship work without sacrificing too much of their own personalities.

This fabulous Blu-ray release looks awesome and sounds fantastic. It is presented in its original 2.35:1 aspect ratio, and it looks big. A ton of extra features pad it out as well, including sing-alongs, retrospective interviews with cast and crew, deleted, alternate and extended scenes and more. I believe this is the same stuff included on the two-DVD set. They are presented in standard definition on the Blu- ray, but the interviews are fun and informative.

If you've never seen Grease, see it in high-def. If you have and enjoyed it, see it again as big as life on this excellent Blu-ray edition.
