Stars mean something to my family. On summer and fall nights, my husband, son, and I take our blankets and pillows outside with us to watch annual meteor showers. Lights flashing and trailing through the night elicit memories of childhood traditions, and it seems my son knows these traditions as well. Wishes abound on meteor shower nights, and in the back of our minds we imagine Jiminy Cricket singing "When You Wish Upon a Star." Nature, tradition, hope, and the imagination of Walt Disney culminate to one small point - a simple wish - to make us part of something bigger, both our popular culture and our desire for something special.

David never reveals his wish to me; instead, he locks it away in his heart to help it "come true." Whether those dreams do come true or not, I cannot say, but I know he never seems disappointed. In Disney's grand culmination of wishing, Wish Gone Amiss, four of the most familiar personalities on The Disney Channel come together beneath a single theme: be careful what you wish for. Pretty girl turned rockstar Miley Stewart (Hannah Montana), mischievous Cory (Cory in the House), and counter-ego twins Zack and Cody (The Suite Life of Zack and Cody) wish on eerily similar shooting stars for various adventures, only to find that the lives they wish for are difficult and that the lives they have, while also difficult, make them who they are inside.

When Miley Stewart wishes to be her rockstar alter-ego Hannah Montana all the time for real, she finds that the friends Miley has made along the way cannot change identities with her and that relationships that were dear to her before fall to the wayside. When Cory, who lives in the White House where his father works as chef, wishes to be president himself, he finds himself in dire circumstances and realizes that he wants to be a relatively normal teenager again. And when Zack and Cody wish for superpowers, they find that the life of superhero is a burden with little appreciation. It is a bold step for The Disney Channel to show that "a wish your heart makes" can have unexpected, undesired repercussions.

While parents may find themselves struggling with the notion of suspension of disbelief, they will be pleased to see the smiles and hear the laughter of pure, unadulterated glee on the faces of their children. Maybe each of us parents will remember the dreams and wishes of our childhood. And maybe each of us will remember to seize these moments punctuated by wishes and dreams that we are given with our children.

This film can be a lot of fun for the whole family - girls, boys, moms and dads alike. Girls and boys are equally represented by the casts, and moms and dads will see some of themselves in the parents of these outrageous kids. So fix the popcorn, pour the drinks, and cuddle with your kids to watch this three-show family collection - Wish Gone Amiss.
