When a favorite show ends its run, you experience an emotional letdown. Your favorite characters are gone, and you just aren't ready to watch the show that the network has slid into its old timeslot. After the The Sopranos went black, I still had Vic Mackey and the crew on The Shield . But once The Shield ended, I wasn't open to a new show.
Though the promos for FX's Sons of Anarchy looked compelling, I didn't really give it a chance. In a way, I'm glad I didn't. Now I can watch with a fresh set of eyes and an open mind, without the bittersweet aftertaste of a favorite show having gone off the air.
The Sons of Anarchy Season Three DVD box set contains four discs with all thirteen episodes:
- So
- Oiled
- Caregiver
- Home
- Turning and Turning
- The Push
- Widening Gyre
- Lochan Mor
- Turas
- Firinne
- Bainne
- June Wedding
- NS
Episodes one, ten, and thirteen include commentaries from cast and crew. The first three discs also feature deleted scenes, but disc 4 has all the extras: The Future Begins Now, a sneak peak at season four, a writers roundtable, custom bike build, directing the season finale with Kurt Sutter, table-read with cast, gag reel, and more deleted scenes.
Season three picks up right where season two left off, opening up with Jackson "Jax" Taylor (Charlie Hunnam) an emotional wreck after the kidnapping of his infant son, Abel. That is the main theme and story arc of this season - finding Abel.
The many smaller story arcs are also satisfying and extremely compelling. Jax's mother, Gemma (Katey Sagal), who was framed for murder, is intertwined with everything dramatically throughout the whole season, with her own plight and that of her son, grandson. But early in the season, she also has to deal with her ailing father (he has dementia) played by Hal Holbrook, in which she has to deal with his care. In that arc runs a good mini-arc with Gemma and her father's caretaker.
A great wrinkle in the main storyline mid-season with Abel has the biker club leaving California for a foreign land. Almost everyone one the show has their moment, making it hard to cover them all. Let's just say that it's not only the bikers but almost the entire town, from soon-to-be-mayor Jacob Hale to Chief Wayne Unser.
Another main storyline strand concerns ATF agent June Stahl, portrayed by Ally Walker (Profiler ). Though there are the usual standing conflicts between the club and the rival Mayans sprinkled throughout the season, and another strong storyline concerning a certain defector with a personal vendetta against Jackson, the Agent Stahl storyline affects all the major players. Personally and professionally, this character has some "wow" moments.
With some hot action and hard-hitting drama delivered in great performances by the cast, season three of Sons of Anarchy will please its diehard fans and attract new ones.
