For years, I have spoken out against Power Rangers . Watching little children on playgrounds dropkick each other in the name of the Red, Blue, Yellow, Pink, or a number of other Rangers convinced me long ago that these men and women promoted discord and violence. But when my son and I cozied down to watch Power Rangers - Operation Overdrive 3: Blue Sapphire , I found a world of adventure with a moral or two interwoven.
As a pacifist by nature, I understand little about lasers and blasters and even less about the desire to knock one another sideways, but my son has shown me that there is much more to Power Rangers phenomenon than a base desire to harm others. What these colorful warriors really stand for is defense of those weaker than themselves, order, and bravery.
Power Rangers - Operation Overdrive 3: Blue Sapphire demonstrates very well the Rangers' desire to protect and serve. Furthermore, the Rangers exemplify teamwork as they come together to form Flashpoint Zord, a formidable opponent for any ne'er do well. Other tools that help the Operation Overdrive Rangers to rid their world of evildoers are mythically-inspired relics such as Thor's hammer and the cannon of Ki Amuk. Also known for their individual skills and awesome vehicles, these are champions of justice who are made for speed. So equipped, they set children's hearts a-thumping in seven adrenaline-pumping episodes as they battle the Fearcats, a breed of alien creatures determined to own the final stone in a set of Corona jewels that offers its holders untold power.
Seeing the joy that the Rangers can bring to a child's face, I recommend Operation Overdrive , but - as with all children's programs - I recommend watching this with your children. Viewing this with your children gives you both the opportunity to bond and relate and the opportunity to explain tough concepts like the difference between defensive maneuvers and offensive maneuvers. Along the way, you may learn some pretty cool moves.
