As someone who grew up watching Jim Henson's The Muppet Show , there is a new joy in watching them again- not only to renew my own childhood memories, but in seeing the joy reborn in my own children as they guess at what will come out of poor Gonzo's horn in the opening sequence and giggle at Scooter or Beaker.
In the second season of The Muppet Show , it really isn't the guest stars that make the show- although they definitely add to it! The imaginative goofiness of the Muppets take center stage. Shorts like Pigs in Space, Veterinarian's Hospital and The Swedish Chef liven it up. The old fogies up in the balcony with their corny jokes make for rolled eyes and stifled laughs as the play on words sinks in and the finger goes for the rewind button.
There are some very notable guest stars, however, through season two. Elton John puts in an appearance with trademark kooky costumes and old favorites like Crocodile Rock, Bennie and the Jets, and Goodbye Yellow Brick Road - all with the help of his furry friends. Steve Martin's goofball antics show up on disc one. George Burns, Julie Andrews and Dom DeLuise also make appearances. This season has everything from great musical talent to a ventriloquist to professional ballet and stand-up comedians. It really does have a little of everything, set against a backdrop of good, wholesome fun.
The menu screens alone are great. On each disc, there are two characters that joke back and forth, waiting ever so patiently for us to make a selection. Whether it is Animal "cuddling" Rizzo or Fozzie Bear driving Kermit crazy, even that part is worth a watch. The bonus features include "The Muppets Valentine Special," "The Muppets on the Muppets" and a Muppetational music video akin to Best of the Bands.
And, small though it may be, the fuzzy little snout of Miss Piggy on the outside of the DVD box is the icing on the cake. Little fingers love details like that. The Complete Second Season of The Muppet Show was awarded an Emmy, and rightly so! It is still worth a few good evenings of family time, even three decades later.
