If you only had basic cable (maybe you didn't even have cable at all) back in 1997, then you probably missed out the horror/sci-fi anthology The Hunger that ran on Showtime from producers Tony and Ridley Scott. This four-disc DVD set has all twenty-two episodes from season one hosted by Terence Stamp.

Disc 1: The Swords, Menage A Trois, Necros, The Secret Shih-Tan, Bridal Suite, Room 17. Disc 2: Anais, No Radio, But AT My Back I Always Hear, Red Light, I'm Dangerous Tonight, The Sloan Men, Disc 3: A Matter Of Style, Hidebound, A River Of Night's Dreaming, The Lighthouse, The Face Of Helene Bournouw. Disc 4: Plain Brown Envelope, The Other Woman, Clarimonde, Footsteps, Bonus Feature: The Hunger Inside.

Even though it was directed by Tony Scott, The Hunger the series has nothing to do with the 1983 movie of the same name. It's more like an Outer Limits/Twilight Zone with a strong sexual component. The lust in some episodes is intense and very passionate; it is especially effective in the "Necros" episode, which is the best of the bunch.

Many familiar faces from both the big screen and television appear here. There is horror icon Karen Black, who appears along side the now-dashing blonde Bond Daniel Craig (Casino Royale). You'll also recognize Curtis Armstrong ("Booger" from Revenge of the Nerds), Esai Morales from NYPD Blue, Michael Gross from Family Ties, Margot Kidder of Superman fame, and Sally Kirkland. Some episodes are more bizarre than others. And some stories clearly take advantage of being on a cable channel. With its Seven-ish/Nine Inch Nails/ Prodigy opening theme sequence to the stories, The Hunger is sure to please those looking for something off the beaten path.
