The Suite Life of Zack and Cody ran for 87 episodes and has long been a favorite of many Disney Channel viewers. Some of the original cast members have since moved on to other things (such as High School Musical 's Ashley Tisdale), so this new series moves the remaining cast away from the Tipton Hotel on to a cruise ship.
Twins Zack (Dylan Sprouse) and Cody (Cole Sprouse) are attending school aboard the cruise ship the S.S. Tipton (what else could it possibly be?). London Tipton (Brenda Song) is, of course, also on board, as is former hotel manager/now-ship-manager Mr. Moseby (Phill Lewis). New cast members include Bailey Pickett (Debby Ryan), a hayseed from Kansas. The first episode has Bailey disguising herself as a boy to gain admission, which has her rooming with Zack and causing all sorts of humor. When it's finally brought out into the open, she becomes roommates with London, opening up multiple avenues for "opposites" type of jokes. Other new cast members include Woody (Matthew Timmons), who is a slob and plays well off of the neatnik Cody. Teacher Miss Tutweiller (Erin Cardillo) rounds out the group.
This DVD contains four episodes, as well as two bonus episodes. Not sure why they don't say that it contains six episodes, Disney is bizarre that way. Some of The Suite Life on Deck: Anchors Away! is funny-the "bonus" episode "International Dateline" is actually one of my personal favorites, when Cody has to live the same day over and over after crossing the international dateline - kind of homage to the movie Groundhog Day .
The Suite Life on Deck has more appeal to kids and 'tweens; the jokes focus on pratfalls and making fun of others. It has a few shining moments that will stand out for adults, but many of the episodes are fairly standard kid-sitcom fare. Again, as with many Disney Channel television series DVDs, I find it frustrating that they don't release an entire season but rather just a few episodes at a time. It's obviously a moneymaker for them, but for kids who like the show, watching four to six episodes over and over out of a 16-22 show season gets very old, very fast.
