This two-disc edition doesn't offer a great deal of fresh content that is not already offered on the Extended Edition DVD. Disc one is essentially the same. It contains the full length feature of High School Musical 2 (in fullscreen, unfortunately, as it was originally a television release). A quick recap of the plot, for those of you who don't know: School's out at East High, and the students are ready for summer vacation. Troy Bolton (Zac Efron) and Gabriella Montez (Vanessa Hudgens) want to be together but really need to find jobs. Sharpay (Ashley Tisdale) and Ryan (Lucas Grabeel) head to their family's Lava Springs Country Club to hang out for the summer, where Sharpay plans to win the Razzle Dazzle talent award as the two have done every other summer. Thanks to some maneuvering by Sharpay, Troy, Gabriella, and the rest of the gang - Chad (Corbin Bleu), Taylor (Monique Coleman), Kelsi (Olesya Rulin) and Zeke (Chris Warren, Jr.) are all hired to work at Lava Springs. Sharpay wants Troy for herself and away from Gabriella, so she manages to get him promoted and the others banned from participating in the talent show. As Troy begins to change with all of the attention and popularity, can his friends show him the error of his ways? High School Musical 2 is enjoyable with catchy songs and sweet performances. Tweens and young teens absolutely love this franchise. Disc two is where the new "dance edition" content lies. Most of the featurettes have been shown between shows on the Disney Channel, much to my daughter's disappointment. If you're looking for never-before-seen footage, there's not much of that here. There are a couple of dance-along segments (again, already shown on the Disney Channel) and many more music videos from performances around the world. Bottom line: if you already own a copy of High School Musical 2 on DVD, this new edition does not offer enough new content to warrant a separate purchase. But if you don't own a copy, the Dance Edition is the one to get. It has enough additional features to make it the best choice in the HSM2 market. And as a bonus, a coupon for a free ticket to High School Musical 3 in theaters is included, and considering movie ticket prices, may just about pay for the DVD.
