At fifteen, Miles (Shane Meier) feels the call of the gold rush, eager to guide the many hopefuls that make their way through town. His stepfather John, a successful guide who now runs the local shop, wants Miles to attend school rather than live the harsh life he knew as a guide. When a truck of sled dogs comes into town, Miles attends the auction hoping to invest. The minute he lays his eyes on Buck, he "knew he was the greatest dog he'd ever seen" and begins the bidding. It's not long before he is outbid and disappointed. Frustrated, he goes to the local tavern where he meets up with a pair of guys looking for a guide. Excitedly he offers to guide them and shows them the trail he would take them through. Twig shows up offering them a shortcut through the river, and they quickly take him up on what appears to be the better offer. While Miles attempts to warn them of the danger of that trail, there is no rationalizing, and soon he and Twig are physically fighting for the opportunity. Defeated yet again, Miles returns home feeling both literally and figuratively beaten. Miles soon learns that Swede, the owner of Buck, has been caught in a snowstorm and lost most of his dogs. While Buck has saved Swede's life, it is possible it will be at the expense of his own as he fights to recover from starvation and exhaustion. Miles rushes out to help nurse Buck back to life as word spreads as to how amazing he is. Buck manages to recover, and Swede is forced to sell him to make enough money to replace his sled team. A writer from the city and her brother end up purchasing Buck at an inflated price, and Miles mother gives him permission to be their guide. Miles quickly learns the dynamics of greed as the pair continue to put demands on Miles that he uncomfortably fulfills. As things turn from bad to worse, Miles begins to wonder if any of them will make it back alive. Fans of Jack London's novel Call of the Wild will delight as the story is brought to life on the screen. Through the narration of both Miles and Buck's thoughts throughout the movie, the insight and character development that make the book a classic come through effectively. Call of the Wild |
