Okay, Okay. Going into this I thought for sure that with a fourth installment of the Scary Movie franchise it would have been the funny joke that went one too many times (anyone remember Airplane 2: The Sequel ?). I was expecting the same concept of lampooning popular culture to fall flat with me since I'd seen it three times previously. But this time out, I have to admit, it's not only a fun, laugh-out-loud connection to my inner fifteen-year-old, but there is actually a storyline. All right, it's paper thin, but it's there nonetheless. Perhaps there is more structure to it because David Zucker (of Airplane and Naked Gun fame) is at the helm this time instead of the Wayans brothers. There is a minimal amount of scatological humor and more of an emphasis on slapstick this time around.
Without giving too much away the plot revolves around the dim witted Cindy Campbell (Anna Farris) and her highly sexual friend Brenda (Regina Hall). They join up with the utterly clueless Tom Ryan (Craig Bierko) as they try to save the world from an alien invasion. I'll leave it at that and just say they spoof everything: War of the Worlds , Saw , The Village , even the president, a really great spot with Leslie Nielsen, who is always tremendous in these type of roles. The cameos by Carmen Electra, Dr, Phil McGraw, Anthony Anderson, Charlie Sheen, and even Mike Tyson are hilarious. You really have to go into this movie with the right mindset; if you go in trying to pick apart the plot or think too deeply abpit the humor, you are missing the point. It's supposed to mindless entertainment that makes fun of everything. The DVD comes with some extras: some commentary tracks and a blooper reel. Overall, Scary Movie 4 delivers tons of juvenile, dirty humor as it spoofs popular culture.
