Take a look inside the Internet phenomenon that is Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog ! The great creative messiah Joss Whedon (the wunderkind behind Buffy the Vampire Slayer , Firefly , and Angel ) gathered his friends together to birth a musical creation that is entertaining, touching and lyrically clever.
Dr. Horrible (Neil Patrick Harris) is an aspiring evil genius trying to get the attention of The League of Evil. To do so, he must pull off a big and impressive crime. His plan: Steal some Wonderflonium to power his Freeze Ray. Dr. Horrible also hopes to get the attention of Penny (Felicia Day), the girl from the laundromat with whom he is smitten. Penny is good and pure and altruistic, so it seems like an awkward fit.
Dr. Horrible's nemesis (all baddies have one) is Captain Hammer (Nathan Fillion). Captain Hammer is good and lucky and enjoys beating up and humiliating Dr. Horrible. The montage of Captain Hammer beating Dr. Horrible is to die for. Naturally, Penny is smitten with Hammer. This only helps to fuel the evil in Dr. Horrible's heart.
Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog is an amazing creation - I stand in constant amazement of those who can put together a piece of entertainment with good music. The lyrics are clever, the music engaging. My only complaint is that it's too short! It was formatted originally for the Internet, and small chunks are what we
have the attention span for. Take heart, though Dr. Horrible lovers:
There is commentary! Spoken commentary! Musical commentary! The
musical commentary is as clever and entertaining as the show itself, which kind of makes up for the short running time.
Excellent! I want more!
