TOY STORY became the first fully computer-animated feature film with its 1995 release. Now almost all animated features are done with computers.
The trailblazing super-geniuses at Pixar were smart enough to put story and characters first but didn't skimp on the tech, either. The result (as you must know if you've not been living under a rock) is one of the finest animated films of all time. You can still go to the local toy emporium and pick up a Buzz Lightyear fifteen years later.
The story (for the rock dwellers) involves the trials and tribulations of young Andy's toys when his birthday rolls around and puts them in danger of being replaced in the heart of their young owner. Woody (Tom Hanks), a cowboy doll with a pull-string, is Andy's (John Morris) alpha toy. All the other toys look to him for advice and leadership.
The last big birthday box to be opened reveals a Buzz Lightyear action figure. Buzz (Tim Allen) is under the delusion that he is an actual space ranger and quickly grows in popularity both with Andy and with the other toys - after all, he has all copper wiring and a laser! Woody's jealousy leads to Buzz getting accidentally knocked out Andy's bedroom window, and to both Buzz and Woody being separated from their owner. Woody must convince Buzz that not only is he a toy: he's very special to Andy, and they both have to return home for Andy's sake as well as their own.
I don't care if you're an adult or a child - you must see this if you haven't yet. This is the fourth iteration of TOY STORY I've owned, and I'm sure I'll get the next version (Disney 3D Brain ChipT) when it becomes available.
What's this version got that the others haven't? Unparalleled picture and sound, for one (or two). It looks fantastic, and sounds big and wonderful. Gary Rydstrom's sounds are available in your living room with more oomph than you heard them in '95. Also included are - Studio Stories, illustrated depictions of stories from the early days of Pixar, told by the people who experienced them and guaranteed to be slightly less than 100% true.
- Buzz Lightyear Mission Logs - a travelog of Buzz's experiences on the international space station.
- Buzz Takes Manhattan - the story of how Buzz Lightyear became a float in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.
The extra features from the last DVD release are still here, and still just as fantastic! If you're a fan of Pixar or animation in general, or if you just love TOY STORY , the Blu-ray edition will not disappoint.
