*Tangled (Two-Disc DVD/Blu-ray Combo)*Tangled is officially Disney's 50th animated feature, and it packs a wallop! This 3D animated adaptation of The Brothers Grimm's Rapunzel is not a faithful translation; I see that as a good thing, as the brothers' tales tend to be a bit, well, grim.

Rapunzel (Mandy Moore) was kidnapped at a very young age from the king and queen by Gothel (Donna Murphy), who uses Rapunzel's magic hair to keep herself young. Rapunzel spends all of her hours in just a few rooms, painting murals, reading the same books over and over, brushing her 70-foot long hair, and cleaning. Rapunzel's only friend is Pascal, a chameleon who hides from Gothel and offers moral support. Gothel has woven a story of a cruel and opportunistic world outside her safe tower full of thieves and ruffians who only want Rapunzel for her hair. Nonetheless, Rapunzel is feeling the urge to see the world outside after 18 years in her tall prison. She's noticed lights in the sky every year on her birthday, and she wants a closer look. Gothel refuses to entertain any more discussion on the subject.

Flynn Rider (Zachary Levi) is a handsome and dexterous thief, more of a knave than a ruffian. He climbs his way into Rapunzel's tower while on the run from the King's guard. He's stolen the crown of the lost princess and is fleeing from Maximus, a cunning and talented horse who seems like more of a dog than a horse. Rapunzel and her magic hair easily best Flynn, and she offers to return the crown he's stolen to him if he'll take her out and show her the lights on her birthday. He agrees, and they begin their journey.

Tangled is beautiful to look at on Blu-ray and excellent to hear, no less than you'd expect from Disney. You can luxuriate in every beautiful strand of her hair, every blade of grass.

I enjoyed Tangled in the theater with my children and I've enjoyed seeing it again. My only complaint is the scant offering of extra features - a short making-of featurette that likely showed on the Disney channel as a promotional offering, some deleted scenes, and that's about it. I look forward to a future release in which we can see further evidence of the hard work and love put into this wonderful film. I'm marking this as my favorite film from Disney's animated canon.
