Can you believe that The Simpsons has run 14 seasons? Trick question. Actually, this collection is only the 2002-2003 season, so there is a backlog of episodes to put on DVD, Blu-ray, and the forthcoming Brain-chipT.
This three-disc set is a Halloween-themed collection featuring the alien Kang on the cover. The menus reflect the mood, and the whole set verily celebrates The Simpsons scariest episodes.
All episodes include commentary and many include cast members commentary including guests. Speaking of guests, Season 14 packs in quite a crowd, including Keith Richards, Marisa Tomei, Eric Idle, "Weird Al" Yankovic, Steve Buscemi, Jackson Browne, David Lander, Elvis Costello, and more! The Simpsons has always packed in the top-notch guests, and this season is no different. Tony Hawk, Joe Mantegna, Scott Thompson, and Stacy Keach do commentary detail on their episodes.
Stand out episodes in this 22-episode season include
- Large Marge, in which Marge (Julie Kavner) is mistakenly given breast implants instead of liposuction
- Bart vs. Lisa vs. the Third Grade, in which Lisa (Yeardley Smith) is skipped forward from second grade, Bart (Nancy Cartwright) is put back from fourth and they meet in the middle
- Mr. Spritz Goes to Washington, in which Krusty (Dan Castellaneta) is groomed for a Congressional run
- Moe Baby Blues, in which Moe the bartender (Hank Azaria) and Maggie Simpson become good friends after Moe saves her life (It's really sweet.)
The fourteenth season is really quite good. I'm a big fan of the first seven or so and can recite much of the dialog from these apropos of nothing at parties (I'm very annoying). I keep expecting every new season that comes out to have a good stink to it, but they don't. They might be different in tone than earlier seasons, but they're just as enjoyable.
The Simpsons has remained one of the most consistently good shows on television since M*A*S*H . If you're like me, you'll keep collecting all seasons until the end of the line.
