As a child, I recall walking timidly into my bedroom, looking under my bed (from a distance, of course - I'm no fool) and then leaping onto it. Naturally the monsters under my bed weren't fast enough, or long-armed enough, to catch me, and they'd shrivel without the protection of the under the bed area. It was a time when I would have terrible nightmares that woke me up screaming (though I couldn't find my voice).

Every child knows there are monsters under the bed and in the closet. Monsters, Inc. explains why, and delivers some information to ease a child's fears: monsters need our screams to power their cities (I wondered why I couldn't scream audibly), but those assigned to us must be brave because a single touch from a child could kill them.

The bravest and most successful monster is James Sullivan (John Goodman), a huge, toothy, blue-furred beast with horns and a tail. His assistant, Mike Wazowski (Billy Crystal), is mostly eye surrounded by green arms and legs. They are the current holders of the scare record but closely followed by Randall Boggs (Steve Buscemi), an eight-legged salamander-looking guy. He's looking to take the record and more.

Because of the extreme toxicity of human children, one escaping into the monster world through its closet door is seriously bad mojo. One night, as Sullivan (Sully) is finishing up after a shift, a little human girl slips into the monster world. Sully tries to hide this fact and takes the girl he later names Boo (Mary Gibbs) to Mike for help. The authorities go on alert, and it becomes instantly more challenging to return her to her room.

Monsters, Inc. is an imaginative film that tries to give children power over their fears of what's in their closets. It's funny, entertaining and touching, and it's about time they put it out on Blu-ray. The technological leaps forward that Pixar has made in Monsters, Inc. in the arena of hair make this film especially ripe for hi-def viewing.

The extra features in this edition are mostly the same as what was put on the original 2-disc DVD set, but in rich, glorious high-def picture and sound. There's a new interactive game in which you try to get a job at Monsters, Inc., a wonderful round table discussion with the creators (at the Hidden City Cafe), and a look at the Monsters, Inc. ride at Tokyo Disneyland.
