I really wanted to like Catch and Release . Really. But nothing about this movie worked for me.
Gray (Jennifer Garner) is supposed to be getting married, but her fiancé, Grady, is killed right before their wedding. Devastated and broken, Gray now has to suffer through a funeral rather than a wedding.To make matters worse, because they were never married, she can't afford to live in the house they were going to live in together. She moves in with Grady's best friends, Dennis (Sam Jaeger) and Sam (Kevin Smith/Silent Bob). Grady's friend from L.A., Fritz (Timothy Olyphant), also decides to stay around in Boulder. Through some interesting turns of event, Gray discovers that Grady was not exactly the person she thought he was, and Grady and Fritz develop a relationship.
Director Susannah Grant tried to make a sweet romantic comedy, but Catch and Release falls short of that goal. Garner's character is flat and unsympathetic - in fact, there is not much character development in the movie at all. The speed at which Gray's relationship with Fritz develops is lightning-fast, and the ending is overly sappy and unbelievable. Kevin Smith does provide some much needed comic relief in this downer of a movie.
Special features include director and actor commentary and a behind-the-scenes featurette on the making of the movie. Neither added particularly to the viewing experience, although I didn't listen to the commentary because I couldn't imagine watching this movie again. Even my 21-year-old daughter, who usually loves every chick flick imaginable (even ones I hate), didn't care for Catch and Release.
