Bambi is the heartwarming and heart-breaking coming-of-age story of a young deer. We meet him at the dawn of his life and follow him as he discovers the world of wonder around him - what a bird is, what a flower is, and how dangerous man can be.
Bambi discovers good things to eat, becomes twitterpated by a beautiful doe, and learns the nature of water when it gets cold - all handled gently and with great emotional impact.
The artistry of Bambi is amazing and beautiful in hi-def Blu-ray. Disney's multiplane technology achieves great effect, bringing depth to what would otherwise be two-dimensional scenes. The artists strike the perfect balance between appealing iconic characters and realistic animals. The film shows a careless nature to man, maybe not to vilify him, but to serve as a warning.
Animals are never seen as threatening, though there are predators and prey closely mingled - perhaps unfair, but it works to make a sweet film. The only issue parents may have is the death of Bambi's mother. While she is not shot onscreen and her body is not shown, it may evoke angst in more sensitive young viewers.
Extra features include an interactive story meeting with Walt Disney and crew, reenacted from transcripts of actual meetings. Branching elements pop up so that you can further explore elements referred to, such as cartoon shorts or interviews with experts on specific elements. You can also use your computer or iPad to interact with elements of the film.
Bambi is an excellent film, and the Diamond Edition brims with extras and great features aplenty to bring joy and fun for years to come.
