The Cartoon Network series Transformers Animated was produced on the heels of the incredibly popular Michael Bay movie . The first disc of the series, Transform and Roll Out , came out earlier this year with just three episodes to give the viewer a taste for what was to come. This "Season One" two-disc DVD set does not contain the episodes on Transform and Roll Out , so in order to own the entire first season you must purchase both DVDs.
The Season One disc is a much better value and contains a great deal more to watch and enjoy (286 minutes versus 68 minutes). The premise, as I'm sure most Transformers aficionados will know: The heroes, the Autobots (Bumblebee, Optimus Prime, Prowl, Bulkhead, and Rachet), are stranded on Earth with the Allspark (the source of all Transformer power), trying to protect it from the evil Decepticons, including Megatron and Starscream.
Thirteen episodes follow the escapades of the Transformers and their human helpers. Unlike the original Transformers television series, in Transformers Animated the humans are aware (and welcome the existence) of most of the Transformers, especially the Autobots.
Transformers Animated is an updated version of Transformers . My ten year-old son liked this set quite a bit, but he did feel as if the characters and plots were scripted to appeal to a younger audience than the older version. His comment, "They are a little babyish, but I still like them." Overall, the main appeal for this series will be to children in the 6-8 age range.
The only special feature is a "Season 2 Photo Gallery" with a sneak peak at some of the newest Transformers featured in the upcoming second season of the animated series.
Transformers Animated Season One is enjoyable for kids and contains some lessons about friendship and working together that are subtle yet present. Even adults with a nostalgia for their childhood and remember watching the Saturday morning show will find something to like on this DVD set.
